Constitutional Court: Election Dispute Trial Open to Public

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Constitutional Court (MK) Chief Justice Anwar Usman announced the trial on the presidential election dispute slated for June 14 will be open to the public.

“This means people can attend the trial and witness the court process and listen to the arguments presented by both sides,” said Anwar Usman at the MK headquarters in Central Jakarta on June 10.

Anwar asserted his institution would present its utmost neutral position in solving the presidential election dispute and promised to provide ample time for both sides to present their arguments.

“We will surely provide equal opportunity, without discrimination,” said Anwar.

He said the materials and pieces of evidence presented during the trial would be used as the basis for the MK’s legal considerations in making a decision.

“We will study it one by one without missing any piece of evidence or witness and experts' testimonies. We will use all of those prior to the final verdict,” he said.

The presidential election’s results were challenged by the team representing presidential and vice-presidential candidates Prabowo-Sandiaga Uno. They refused to accept the final vote count by the General Elections Commission (KPU) that announced Jokowi-Ma’ruf Amin as the country's president and VP for the next five years.

The appeal was filed by Prabowo’s campaign team (BPN) to the MK on Friday, May 24. They accuse the Jokowi camp of foul play that was structured, systematic, and massive.
